If you have watched any videos on YouTube, you’ve probably noticed that when the video you are watching ends, either a screen will come up with a bunch of “related video” thumbnails, or a “related video” will just automatically start playing after ten seconds unless you click cancel.

The problem with this is that some of the videos that YouTube thinks are related to yours could be from one of your competitors, or they may not be related at all, and once the potential customer clicks on that video thumbnail, they are no longer on your channel and you have no way to get them back.

End Screens help to retain your viewer’s engagement by giving them the option to click on a link, video, playlist, or channel that you want them to be directed to.

End Screens are displayed in the last 5-20 seconds of a video and allow you to add up to four elements (at least one element must be a video or playlist) to promote your content, channel and websites. Each element can expand to show more information when your viewer hovers over it on a desktop computer or taps on it using a mobile device.

If you plan to use an end screen on your video, you will need to add 5-20 seconds of black (or whatever color or image you want as the background for your end screen) to the end of your video before uploading it to YouTube. YouTube will then overlay the End Screen elements that you choose over that last 5-20 seconds of your video.

To add an end screen:

1. Sign into your YouTube account and click your account icon in the top right, then select YouTube Studio from the drop down menu.

2. Select the “Videos” tab from the left menu, then find and click on the video that you want to add an end screen to.

3. Scroll down and click on the “End Screen” button on the right side of the screen.

4. Choose one of the template layouts from the top left section of the screen (there are six options to choose from), or create your own end screen template by click the plus sign on the top track of the time and choosing an element to add (you can choose up to 4 elements to include on your End Screen).

5. You can lengthen or shorten the start or end time of each element you choose by clicking and dragging at either end of the selected element.

6. Make sure to save your changes when you are done.
